First, let’s start with those pesky germs.  We use the term germ to mean any kind of pathogen that makes us sick.  Bacteria is only one of many pathogens.   Although 90% of bacteria are “good” bacteria, which is needed for us to live, that 10% of “bad” bacteria can cause many different diseases.Bacterial infections include E. coli, TB, Lyme disease and many more.

Bacteria is a single cell that reproduces by binary fission.   Simply put, it clones itself.  The single cell bacterium divides in half to make two identical daughter cells.  When the right temperature and nutrients are available, some bacteria like E. coli can divide every 20 minutes.  In one hour, one single bacterium becomes eight.  Doesn’t seem like much, does it?  After seven hours, one bacterium can generate 2,097,152 bacteria.  After one more hour the number of bacteria will have become 16,777,216! That’s why we can quickly become ill when pathogenic microbes invade our bodies.2

Bacteria spread by the tiny droplets from sneezing or coughing.  These droplets can fly through the air, as mist, up to 10 feet.  They can live on chairs, light switches and computers for up to 2 hours.  Once on our hands, they can live longer.  Since we touch our face an amazing 5500 times a day, we will eventually touch our eyes or mouth to transfer that tiny droplet filled with bacteria into our bodies.

The CDC says that the best way to kill pathogens is to wash hands.  Their recommendation is to:

  • *Wet your hands with clean running water (warm or cold) and apply soap.
  • *Rub your hands together to make a lather and scrub them well; be sure to scrub the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
  • *Continue rubbing your hands for at least 20 seconds.  Need a timer?  Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice.
  • *Rinse your hands well under running water.
  • *Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry.3 

Also from the CDC:

“Wet hands have been known to transfer pathogens much more readily than dry hands or hands not washed at all. The residual moisture determines the level of bacterial and viral transfer following hand washing.  Careful hand drying is a critical factor for bacterial transfer to skin, food and environmental surfaces.”   Acceptable hand drying methods listed are single-use paper towel, single-use cloth towels and hand dryers.4

So, now we know how fast some bacteria breed and how to stop the spread of bacteria, but few people actually wash their hands well enough to kill the pathogens from their hands.   According to a Michigan State University study, only 5% of over 4000 subjects were observed to wash their hands correctly.5   If the majority of people are not doing their part in keeping germs down to a minimum, how are we to keep those germs away from us?

How to Sanitize Hands Without Washing Them and Without Using Chemicals: Cold Plasma

It has been accepted that hand washing is the easiest and most effective way to stop the spread of germs.  According to the CDC in Atlanta, there is a correct way to wash hands.  Rub hands together with soap, up past the wrists, between the fingers and under the nails, preferably with a nail brush for 20 seconds.  How many people actually do this?  The numbers are astounding.

The American Society of Microbiology conducted a study of people washing hands during the mid-2000’s.  They concluded of the 97% of adult female test subjects who said they washed their hands, only 75% actually did.   Even worse, of the 92% of adult male test subjects who said they washed their hands, only 58% were observed to actually wash.  The same study revealed  50% of middle and high school students said they wash,  but in reality only 33% of females and 8% of males used soap while washing hands. 1

Another study from Michigan State University, which was one of the first to take into account whether the subjects used soap and the duration of hand washing, had even worse findings.  The subjects were observed in bars, restaurants and other public places.  15% of men and 7% of women did not wash their hands at all.   When they did wash their hands, only 50% of men and 78% of women used soap.   Remember the CDC’s recommendation on how to wash hands?  In this study, most people were found to only wash hands for about 6 seconds.  It was concluded only 5% of the over 4000 subjects washed their hands correctly.2

In order to stay healthy and not spread diseases and pathogens, hand washing is a must.  But research suggests that children and adults alike do not wash hands correctly.  Four years ago The American Society of Microbiology started a “Clean Hands Campaign” in certain cities to educate people about the importance of hand washing to stop the spread of colds, diarrhea and other infectious diseases.  The study showed that after four years of campaigning, Americans actually washed hands less than before the campaign.  The “Clean Hands Campaign” was a complete failure.  To the microbiology society, made up of infection control experts, this is a serious problem.  “Fifteen seconds of soap and water and rubbing your hands is a wonderful way to get germs off.  We are not making a lot of progress,” said microbiologist Judy Daly of Primary Children’s Medical Center in Salt Lake City, the society’s secretary. 3

It seems that although people know that hand washing is important to stave off germs and bacteria, they do not do it correctly.  What can we do about the spread of pathogens in our society that are making us sick?  We are in luck.  Amazing studies around the world have been proving a natural phenomenon called cold plasma can actually kill harmful pathogens in our environment.   Plasma is considered to be the fourth stage of matter.  As matter heats, it changes from a solid to liquid to gas to plasma.  Plasma is simply a gas in which a proportion of the particles are ionized.   Studies have shown the potential of plasma in surgical settings including disinfection, treatment of burns and chronic wounds, control of bleeding and tissue welding.4
